Opinions regarding the dates for the composition of Dante’s major works, plus where they were actually written, vary dramatically. The Divine Comedy, in particular, is exceptionally difficult to pin down. What is clear, however, is that Dante’s “exile” began in 1300, well before his literal exile from Florence. Thus, it is highly likely that Inferno was written prior to his physical expulsion from Florence in 1302. This suggests that the entirety of The Divine Comedy is both “Franciscan,” as suggested by scholars, and a record of political and spiritual exile en route (literally and figuratively) to Paradiso.
